Grieving over the death of a loved one is not only
normal, but also healthy and necessary. However, our society often views grieving over the
loss of a pet as something childish. This dichotomy means that expressed feelings over the
loss of a pet often go un-validated, leaving the bereaved embarrassed and ashamed. Pet
loss is, in truth, a unique form of grief. "It can be quite intense and debilitating,
increasing an individuals vulnerability to subsequent stress and leaving him/her
feeling isolated and misunderstood." (Ross, Baron-Sorensen, 1998)
Designed to aide the mourning pet owner and the pet owner preparing to lose a
beloved friend, this workshop will let you know that you are not alone. We will
discuss many of the questions surrounding pet loss emotionally, physically, spiritually,
practically, and, even, scripturally. We will discuss how death affects both humans and
other pets, and what animals can teach us about death, dying, and beyond.
This workshop has been developed by Lorelei Hunt, a professional animal communicator,
and E. Talley Brown, a Ph.D. candidate in Metaphysics with a concentration in animal
cognition. Both women have dealt far too often with societys misconceptions
regarding pet loss, and are ready to educate people about the human-animal bond.
